LOL
Алексей Шилин you are right
Chinese dude offered me new battery. I decided to kindly ask for refund and get a Lenovo one
It’s my growing up :)
Smart choice. Bear in mind though that Lenovo branded batteries can also be not original. I bought a couple branded HP and ASUS, and the former resulted in a warning about counterfeit battery on every system startup, and the latter was labeled 45 Wh but was actually 33.
It’s possible that the next one will be fine, but i think i want to hold on to X1G9 for a while so it’s not worth it
But at least they work fine.
Actually I ordered an original Lenovo battery from lenovo partner service in my city. I asked 3 times to confirm it’s NOT a replacement
That was an hour ago
My X1G8 has the same brand from the same seller who sold me the faulty X1G9, while the X1G8 one works perfectly
The one you bought recently was totally fine, too. You just misunderstood the specs: when it said 10 hours of battery life, it literally meant 10 hours and that's it, it'd dead then.
It should have been 57wh but i got it with 58wh
After 3 cycles it now has 60wh
And it dies at 50% once, other times at 10%
I just don’t like not knowing when it will shut off
Yep, and system can't even warn you because it only know what battery controller tells it.
KingSener battery discharge https://youtu.be/V2FYldWTat4
This is the last discharge last night
This time it died at 10%
I had my laptop die at a little less than 10% once but that was because it was sitting on AC power for months, so I just needed a full cycle to recalibrate it.
Yeah but you can only calibrate a non-faulty battery firmware
This battery is presenting unrealistic numbers
This certainly shouldn't happen after just 3 cycles and less than a week of use.
You can see in my video voltage drop after 12%
When it gets to 11% the voltage goes to shit
I asume there is a lowest voltage protection cutoff
Also my new battery monitor program doesnt work with batteries that dont go below 10% :)
Just installed void linux, it works but i have a little problem. On the setup it was asked for a separate boot partition. I created a separate one, but i have also arch linux as second distro, i thought it will replace the boot partition of the arch distro, therefore i have now two boot partitions. And the boot menu of each distro
Just installed void linux, it works but i have a little problem. On the setup it was asked for a separate boot partition. I created a separate one, but i have also arch linux as second distro, i thought it will replace the boot partition of the arch distro, therefore i have now two boot partitions. And the boot menu of each distro shows only one distro to select.
Now how can i merge the grub boot menu? But it seems, void linux comes with a custom grub boot menu.
Boot or ESP?
I.e. one where kernel goes, or one where bootloader goes?
Where bootloader goes
Just to be sure: where is it mounted?
/boot/efi
I have two of such partitions
In this case you should be able to just unmount your current ESP, mount the other one at the same location, and reinstall GRUB:
# grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --bootloader-id=<your system's ID e.g. "void">
— and then update its configuration file (grub-mkconfig or wrappers if available in the distribution).
You can also mount other Linux system into your current one, update GRUB config, and it should detect and add it to its GRUB menu as well, so you'll be able to select the OS in GRUB rather than in UEFI boot menu.
Thanks much, i will look later into that, iam now outside enjoying the weather

I hope they are removed. Maybe that draws some attention to how shitty Nvidia maintainence has been.
This is beyond ridiculous at this point.
i still don't understand a thing: is it an official nvidia repo or a debian one?
Debian
I am here
I guess you could use serif for your blog and maybe for forum posts.
UI is better suited with a sans.
ok
So you're searching for some unique font?
Ideally it should have both type faces so that everything looks coherent.
it doesn't have to be "too unique" but I did wish to "stand out" at least a little bit, without being a fist into the eye
https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Newsreader?preview.script=Latn
this for UI?
https://fonts.google.com/?query=IBM+Plex
Maybe?
Has both.
This one is serif tho?
Smaller sizes look weird on my screen, not sure if it's the screen or my eyes or the font.
This one looks better as purely serif in my opinion.
actually IBM plex was my second choice but .... it's fucking plain. it doesn't stand out in any way or maybe I am blind IDK
I will think about it more
https://fonts.google.com/specimen/PT+Serif ?
I am working on two things. can you give me feedback on something else?
https://watch.linuxrenaissance.com/
in the header you will see the "videos" is red because it should be obvious why it is red
do you think that's a good idea or irrelevant?
Active?
yeah, I am trying to put the same header across all my sites
I think it's looks good.
one of my ideas is that active site is red.
another idea is that active site is not even shown as an option
I think it looks good.
on mobile every option takes a lot of space
Re idea #2: people are generally used to how e.g. tabs work and they don't disappear when activated.
ok thanks
I actually noticed it when you made the top bar but decided to not say anything.
Both are design choices, but I like this one better.
I guess it's going to be either scrollable (worse) or hamburger on mobile?
no, it will go into second row on mobile
right now it's broken on mobile on peertube, it will be like on forum on mobile
Not ideal but looks fine in 2 rows.
I added a support forum category. I am deciging on font family. header is hetting that "tab" feel everywhere. web blog preview posts in linux renaissance forum category is no longer showing the "show full post" button
Why no button?
when I said two rows I meant one row title and the menu second row. ths is now three rows and I don't want it like this
I understood what you meant.
because it now shows the full post immediately
Again, why?
The purpose of the button was to be able to skip right to comments if you already read the article.
iceblade did not understand what is the meaning of that button and why he needs to press it. and he is a typical user
And now one needs to scroll a wall every time.
I think forum will auto scroll for you if you are opining the topic for the second time
but first time you will scroll, yes
however, on the website I also changed the "comment" form in a way that you can reply to the web blog post directly without leaving the web site and no need to go to forum (you do need to be logged in, though)
OK, forum now has a red word "forum" in the nav bar
IDK. Many sites have a cut functionality.
But it's fine if it autoscrolls I guess.
coc I think I will move to footer?
I need to remote two things from header in order to fit a phone screen
Yeah, it's not important anyway.
one more must go
maybe courses. that's just one page on my website
Remember that mobile have different screen sizes, so which one are you targeting?
how do forum fonts looks now, overall?
mine?
New Topic button, Categories etc. — are all still using serif, or is my browser acting out?
Not sure about topic lists, what they should use.
yeah I did not see that, let me do those too
this IBM plex is actually good.
it takes a bit to start noticing it, but when you look at it for a while you start seeing that it's a bit different sans than usual
better now?
It's changed.
ok, footer now
I would say that these changes are a lot of manual work, but in fact they are a lot of babysitting. 🤣
now to decide which one to ax from the header
I am axing patrons

Алексей Шилин can you open my website now? I moved it to Croatia
It opened just fine. 👍
ok, so now you know what I have been working on.
not that you didn't know, but seeing is believing :P
You used Cloudflare Pages before right?
yes
So you moved to a different hosting?
I moved it to my own debian
I have debian for peertube, another debian for web server, another debian for matrix, one ubuntu server for forum, one openbsd with a web server for my personal website for testing and jump host. FreeBSD firewall in front of everything with Caddy reverse proxy
So self-hosting? That's cool!
yes, all of this is self hosted. matrix was the first, I think
forum is the first thing where I actually host users.
more ai crap
i am 99% certain
i cant wait for the ai bubble to pop
I doubt it will pop
they are spending a lot of money, that's for sure. but more advancements with Ai will be made and in ~5 years we might even start believing that we are dealing with rudimental intelligence
i would say it will pop after all investors dont have infinite money and they want a return soon but costs of ai is way more
That is a fair observation, however Microsoft has a shitload of money
They were willing to spend 100B on gaming with no tangible return
They tried, it didn’t work, life goes on for them
They are still trying to salvage their gaming investment, they didn’t kill that business
I wonder if N1X will be more Linux friendly than Qualcomm so far.
I wouldn’t bet on Nvidia but you never know
Even without fully fleshed-out FEX, it seems like an interesting laptop proposition for me
Most of the software except for games is already ready.
Exactly. I don’t need games on it, but it would be nice to be able to utilize what I would pay for
Sleep battery non-drain is an important measurement for me. 25 days seems impossible for x86 so I am looking forward to Lenovo battery next week to test this properly
As for Nvidia chip - I am all ears.
It's not important to me since I actively use my laptops, but I won't say no to it either.
I understand, but when my laptop is my second device then it starts being more relevant
I doubt it is about the architecture though, it's not like the CPU is actively doing something while sleeping.
Most of the drain is platform. Laptops with the same CPU can have very different sleep drain.
Sometimes i will use my floor pc after work and then my work laptop in the morning and my X1 will be sleeping for 24 hours. So it’s nice if it didn’t drain 1/4 of battery
RAM chips utilize the majority of electricity, I believe
like open ai gained 25billion from investors and users but are expected to spend 50billion 2026
My T480 went from 4 days of sleep to 2 days when I swapped RAM modules for some gaming branded modules
Those don't depend on CPU's instruction set.
was the nea RAM ecc by anychanse?
was the new RAM ecc by anychanse?
I like this technology and I hope they develop it further so that consumer electronics in 2030 can do what Claude Cloud can do in 2026.
I don’t want those Ai big tech becoming our next overlords, though.
AFAIK no consumer laptop supports ECC except maybe some high-end workstation class models which I never heard of
yea and ai has resently hit a very bid diminishing returns per power used (exept resent token compression)
I am considering ECC for my next PC build, though. And I need it for my NAS
oh did not know laptops ram did not have ECC support
I failed to find one
Is there even ECC RAM with 8000+ MT/s?
My wife says I need to drop the phone from my hands
XD
I wonder how much screen on time she has on hers.
i was testing a script to handle the dependancies of different opensuse versions and i have to say that distrobox containers/podman containers really are usefull for these things.
Time to bring the laptop then.
8000MHz with ECC dose exist but there stupid expensive even befor RAM inflation
So probably not coming to consumer laptops any time soon.
funny loop hole to that rule but bet not popular with the wife

I will do it earlier in the week next week
I wonder if Valve pays attention to Panther Lakes. Current AMD offerings are significantly faster than what SteamDeck has, and Panther Lakes are about 1.5 faster than those.
Valve paying attention to PL in what sense?
SD2.
You mean for SD2
AMD has been quite disappointing lately.
My gut feeling tells me that SD2 is years away so PL will be obsolete by then.
However, I also think that Valve is planning to practice SD2 on SteamFrame.
It will be harder and harder to justify the price for SD1 when competiton is way ahead in performance and battery life.
Certainly not a $300 price hike.
SD1 doesn’t need justified price anymore, I think. It is over.
And the next one may be ARM
SteamFrame needs to be on the matket for ~2 years for Valve to gather experience with that conversion tech before they can announce SD2
I think we're years away from consumer ARM handheld, and you need to fill the blank in the meantime, otherwise people will buy SD less and less, and as the result game studios will pay less and less attention to the platform. And I don't think SteamMachine will be a best seller in any type or form.
Machine will sell poorly.
I was hoping for 5 million but it might not reach one
I was hoping for 5 million but it might not reach one million
Valve already has a successful product on their hands which doesn't even need marketing, people are already aware. They just need to not let it rot and become obsolete.
You think they should hurry with SD2x86
Make it SD1½ for all I care.
I think a console-type of device must sit for 6 years before succesor
The thing is, you can't apply the same math to this kind of device. Consoles are closed ecosystems, and people are less likely to switch because they'll need to switch ecosystems, often buy games second time etc. When you're playing on a much more open field I think you can't let yourself be outrun by competition. Also, SD and co audience is not strictly console minded players, they are more geeky and therefore less reluctant to change.
The fact is that forza horizon 6 works on sd but the experience isn’t smooth
why don't they try something with the hw of the switch?/ steam frame?
Because its Nintendo’s property
Given how much your CPU is utilized when playing, and how much weaker the SD CPU is, I wonder if it's more CPU bottlenecked there.
I belive yes
fps fluctuates a lot
yes,the cpu is the issue, they the 780m can run it at 1080 almost ultra graphics setting and even ray tracing with fsr and 30fps
Forza horizon type of game is perfectly fine at 30 fps. But on SD it’s not smooth 30
yes,the cpu is the issue, the 780m can run it at 1080 almost ultra graphics setting and even ray tracing with fsr and 30fps,the gpus like gtx1650 are more limited by vram on forza
Sometimes it’s 40 fps, sometimes 25
https://youtu.be/kdjOlKt-dgo?is=yLWEhgYwJVVpmzCH
780M is RDNA3, SD is RDNA2.
and a much better cpu
Better than Zen4?
SD is Zen2.
Year on year improvements are big with Ryzens. My big cache can only do so much…
the cache is what th x3d are for, without the cache they wouldn't make sense
But once again I need to say that this game is designed for a 6-year old console
the xbox series s with something like a 6500/6500xt?
Radeon 6700XT?
i'm thinking of this model
That one is the same as the big one, just targets 4x less pixels on screen
no,i'm thinking of this model, the ones many xbox players have.
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/xbox-series-s-gpu.c3683
Compare S gpu to this iGPU
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/xbox-series-x-gpu.c3482
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-rx-6500-xt.c3850
I am no longer sure what the topic of the conversation is
i can't do a comparison between the s gpu and igpu but maybe i can of the 6500xt and 780m/steam deck one
you said you are amazed at how well the game works on modern iGPU PC, and I reminded that the game is designed for a 6-year-old console. and after that there was no substance in this conversation
SD CPU isn't weak "per core" for Forza Horizon 6, I believe. It simply lacks cores.
yes, only data about the consoles and the closest gpu to the xbox series s
SD 4 cores
Xbox Series S - 8 cores
on my PC it is very obvious that ALL 8 of my cores are almost fully utilized
and from my experience once the CPU comes to 75% on each core in a video game - that is the end. it usually can't go above that. that's the bottleneck
Again, SD is not 780M.
so with steam deck - those 4 cores are the reason why it can't hold 30 fps steady in this particular game that seems to be thread optimized
my Ryzen 3700X plays FH5 perfectly fine.
my Ryzen 3700X plays FH6 perfectly fine.
then do you want me to use somethig like a 680 or maybe if i find it a z1?
me or rootlexx?
SD: 1.6 TFLOPS 780M: 8.9 TFLOPS
Real world difference is not that big but still significant.
so 780M has more grunt than Series S
TBH I am low energy right now. But a promise is a promise and I will keep it up. I will go rest for half an hour and try to restore some energy
how do you feel about moving LPIC to Saturdays?
Whoever came up with this idea is a genius.
yes

KDE could soon switch to bi-yearly Plasma releases, like Gnome.
Funny enough the one distro which they mostly care about — Fedora — doesn't care and just updates in a rolling fashion.
Two years ago they announced exactly this, then said they will pospone it until Wayland is ready. In a few weeks KDE is removing X11 login session which means that they consider Wayland ready.
True :)
@Rootlexx posted in Let's Learn Linux: Customize or write simple scripts — Lesson 1/2
Of course! That is how scripts work: they are just lines which are executed one by one.
I expect quite a lot of butthurt even though they've announced it long time ago.
However it's not going to be in a few weeks: 6.7 will be the last to have X11 support, it's 6.8 where they'll remove it.
Unless a few months also counts as a few weeks of course. 😄
I meant 6.8 developments starts in a few weeks
They will drop x11 immediately in 6.8 dev
Ah, sure, but end users won't notice for months.
Tru tru
Kekw
OpenMandriva chat believes that KDE is lying about 95% Wayland users in Plasma 6.6
I fail to see what would lying accomplish
Idk, I don't trust any number anyway kek
Do they have anything to support that?
yes, the metrics that KDE uses to measure 95% of wayland users is incorrect because all X11 users disable metrics
Why would X11 users disable metrics any mor than Wayland users?
that was not said, but I feel like X11 users care more about privacy? at least that's how I understood it
Also, it's so funny. — KDE developers ask you for feedback. — You deny that, no way KDE gets my feedback! — You complain that KDE developers don't know about you.

Now seriously speaking, they're just wishful thinking and coping.
That's fine, but reality is a cruel thing.
I was going to tell them that KDE X11 has been abandonware for some time (KDE devs said that) but I decided not to do that because they would not believe me
I am not there but if I had to guess they'd be aggressive against your statement.
they are kind towards me. but I think they would be conflicted about my opinion
For some reason this technical difference escalated to emotional and principal.
I guess Lunduke played a role in that.
I haven't seen Lunduke's video on this topic
only Phoronix so far
I'm talking about all this X11 good Wayland bad debate in general.
oh that
I still very much like the "network-first" design of X, compared to Wayland which is something completely different.
But KDE and Gnome developers have given me better desktop on their Wayland stack. And I want better desktop experience.
At the end of the day - the "name of the stack" does not matter all that much
The problem is, this "network-first" design doesn't really work as intended.

Skynet One
youtube is struggling for me while playing. barely plays 360p
People designing the protocol thought that clients would send commands to draw primitives, but in reality toolkits render everything by themselves and send bitmaps which is not efficient in any way. waypipe is more efficient here.
I would like waypipe or equivalent to become something like standard equipment. but installing it manually is fine too
I mean, ssh is not exactly built into X server either (thank god!).
And given how few people actually use it, it doesn't make sense to have it by default. X11 network trasparency is not used as intended either (thin clients).

I need to get better at this too. I need to stop drinking so much pop, or soda…or whatever you wanna call it. I’m trying to ween myself down from it, but I need to get on water a lot more.
idk about that. a free software can could still be dangerous
cool !
congrats !!!!

why is triz so important ? i am legit asking, as i do not get it
cause it is free software
x11 is not abandonware, it is stable

it turns innovation from random brainstorming into a structured method of reusing proven solution patterns from other domains, especially for resolving contradictions in systems
Of course iIt works best when you already understand the system you’re working with. So have limitations, like administrative decisions and conflicts of interest. In this case, I use the Nash equilibrium.
and this is exactly you have in the Erdős problem story: not looking for a new hammer, but searching through the vast expanse of existing hammers and finding one that no one has ever tried to use on that nail.
From a practical innovation perspective, this often provides more value than trying to create something completely new from scratch.
and LLM is the highest form of ARIZ, the use of resources already existing in the system but unused.
That is true though.
It is solvable of course, but that's current state of affairs.
So e.g. Discord client running in background can have all your passwords you ever type anywhere.

That the main problem I have with Wayland : too Much "sEcUrItY" for a display server
Display server certainly shouldn't provide all the means for malware to effortlessly work. There's a reason most sensitive subsystems implement privilege separation, and graphics server is a sensitive subsystem.
One can e.g. sandbox apps one doesn't trust and they won't be able to do anything, but if they have access to X socket — which they do if they're graphical apps — then the whole sandbox is basically useless since X server itself serves as a hole.

Maybe you could try making lemonade or other home-made concoctions, these are often nicer, may take a fair bit of work to make and you will see how much sugar is going in there… plus you kinda feel like you gotta enjoy them more after all that effort. Oh and if you really want them to be fizzy there’s some shachets you can put in there that will fizz them up. Last year I made my own cola recipe w...
In theory X could have been reworked in a secure way and maybe called X12. But then it would be unable to run X11 apps, just like Wayland can’t run X11 apps.
So we now have the new stuff and the old stuff to chose from.
GTK will no longer support X.
GTK will no longer support X in the future.
In theory one can e.g. make insecure calls return garbage or placeholders instead of real data, but that will inevitably break not the protocol but those apps functionality.
This is all solvable, it just requires lots of effort from both X develoeprs and toolkits developers and 3rd-party apps developers.
Which I don't see coming given current momentum.
imo i do not work a "secure" x12 that break everythinng , it exist and it suck , it is called wayland
Wayland could have ben called X12 btw
the x12 compositor protocol
but they scrapped it to create a worse version
called wayland
Wayland could have ben called X12 btw, edit : actualy no, but wayland for them is like x12 : a remplacement/upgrade of x11
when imo it is a downgrade
and a forced ideology of paranao i dislike
x11 is freedom
wayland is not
That is a weird take. And most people won't agree with you on that either.
You are allowed to not care and use password password everywhere ofc.
I have no clue what Xgui said above
it's a mix of typos and nonsense
He doesn't like that Wayland is more secure.
that is a wrong reason to dislike software
I mean, liking or disliking is subjective so it's a fine reason.
Most people would prefer their banking account password to not be easily keylogged though.
I already thought about it and the least-effort work would be to take existing kde+qt or existing gnome49+gtk and fork both components and start developing new kind of multi monitor support, starting with the toolkit, then through the window manager, and in the end there will be need for feature upgrades from the X server, most likely.
I just don't see anyone care enough to do anything about it.
All I see is people complaining how someone should make them something.
I've seen many complaints from people who can't code, and way less from people who can.
But they do their thing, I'm fine as long as they don't come to other project and demand doing work for them for free.

He doesn't like that Wayland is more secure.
And i do not ask them to "work for free" but to stop forcing people to use something they do not want to
Wayland cab exist that fine
but don't force it on me
Wayland ca6b exist that fine
Wayland can exist that fine
I will not.
That is just false. If Wayland broke everything then people wouldn't be able to use it, yet I'm using it, Darth's using it, and millions of people are also using it. What it breaks is some very niche scenarios which just haven't been solved yet, but I'm pretty certain they will be eventually.
People are mostly using windows and doesn't work, yeah is da usual
Didn't understand what you were trying to say, sorry.

well maybe with xwayland, but without xwayland , it will be different

I haven’t noticed tbh. I will fix
Should I take free 64GB RAM?
I generally don’t use more than 10GB unless I am live streaming or video editing. In those cases I go over 16GB regularly.
I have 32GB, meaning I have no clue what to do with 64.

I can. I just feel like its going to look funny when i see 54GB free mem
I can set swappines to near zero maybe
I can set swappines to near zero maybe. But i can do that now too
I am saying that 64 is possibly the same as 32 unless i move my VM’s to my main pc
Which is probably what I will do. I have some new ideas for that computer which drives my vm’s
on your main pc?
yes
then you should take it,it's free ram after all
i thought about it as well but one time i blender still used 12/10GB of ram while i was testing video editing so it could be usefull for that unless davinci is much more efficient
it's not entirely free, but it depends on the view point. there is this dude who I appreciate so I have gifted him a GPU yesterday. I asked for nothing in return.
and today he calls me that he cannot handle that gift in his mind and he want to give me something and he offered to swap my 32GB for hid 64GB.
that's the entire story.

good then,a really good thing.
because I have 2x16 modules and he has 2x32 modules
people are nice :)
a good action/karma thing, like in the tv series: My name is Earl.
didn't watch but I believe I understand the sentiment
in my opinion you should get it and then try some heavg video editing/things you considered heavy in ram usage, just to see how they feel with more ram.

When i upgraded to a 16GB machine from an 8GB one i could make the same things but when i've got a 32GB one,i automatically expanded my hobbies and tried things i knew the older machine couldn't handle.

This is a legit difficult topic that we can discuss indefinitely, for better or worse. The EU is a political organization, not ideological. This means that they will not promote Linux because it’s Free Software. However, they might promote it if we frame it as software independence from USA big tech — which is what is the current topic in various EU talks. What I am trying to say is: If you are t...
An example: i tried some light video editing with blender, 2 game clips in fhd i recorded and 2 fhd avchd 25mbps from my sony camera + "flat like profile to edit colors".
I understand. But jump from 8 to 16 is huge.
If you check my past few YT videos you will notice they are already 4K.
Recently I rearranged my monitors and changed which one I use for OBS recording. I now use my 4K monitor for recording howtos. And when I do talking head videos I record in 4K again... Because I can.
i don't have 4k monitors,so i didn't noticed it but i thought of upscaling my video tests to 4k.

16GB VRAM is perfectly fine for 4K video editing
if I will be able to afford it I will buy more VRAM next time.
i heard that 4k video editing is quite taxing on vram and ram, it's good to have adequate specs to what you're doing. i don't think i'll ever be able to use more than 2GB of vram for my workflow(not even video centric) but the vram usage out of my gpu which is 4GB as always been well under the vram limit, even in the 2 games i played,i think that for the next years i'll be good.
Until now i've been under the 32GB usage but still max in the mid 20s
Until now i've been under the 32GB usage but still max in the early to mid 20s
microsoft flight simulator uses more than 20GB VRAM (if you have it)
recently I was considering getting Intel GPU with 32GB VRAM. it's affordable, but it's not good for games.
the B70 ? the one that costs 1300euro?
you know what's funny? Nvidia RTX5090 can play games and do LLM models and video encoding.
Radeon 9070XT can do video games best
Intel with 32GB can do video encoding and LLM's
Radeon and Intel together cost less than one Nvidia
that one, yes
i would dissagre on the afordable part XD
compared to Nvidia with 32GB ... 4000€
dont nvidia laso have the ai focused ones thats not for games
if you really NEED 32GB (LLM's usually) and don't need CUDA ...
they do, yes. 10 000 €
oh nvm did not realise those where way more costly
it should be good enough for video editing and driving the desktop/recording/opencl then
so nvidia basically have the 5090 for 32GB or the quadros so yea gues the intell one is afordable after all
I mean if you need it for legit work then the price is warranted 1300
if you want it to fool around and do nothing productive then any price is unaffordable hehe
not Quadros. I mean A and B cards
personally the thing i'm interested about cuda is trying the things learned at lecture for convolution and such, things applied to the images, maybe i could "fabricate" something for ansel that it's faster on nvidia gpu than the current opencl hdr implementationbut i think it'll take soo much time,as it's opensource software the best thing is no one cares how much time you do it,no deadlines, still a good idea for the future.
Nvidia A100 / 80GB / 11 000 €
Nvidia H100 / 94GB / 33 000 €
Nvidia H200 / 141GB / 38 000€

intel arc pro cards have a lot of vram for the price, they should have an nvidia layer thing as well with one api,i read it somewhere on the intel docs when openvino/the sycl thing was hyped
I am probably not a good person to talk to, about this, because I lack experience.
But GENERALLY speaking — if you are learning and trying your hand at making things, I see no reason to invest in Nvidia if you can do everything with OpenCL, but a tiny bit slower
I mean invest in "serious" Nvidia card. You can get cheap CUDA with VRAM limits, of course
i want to use what i have now because i wouldn't buy an another gpu for the side project and i can't afford it. I looked at cuda by chance as it seemed much more understandable than whatever opencl i looked up,like the basics of c i know plus their own syntax and things but opencl was cursed just to look at, i'll have to practice c and assembly again in a couple of months after i finish the java things

your current nvidia has no cuda?
yes,it has cuda
then you are good to go. just constrained withing 4GB

what's 28-70?
I mean why is that considered limited
and what is the f range
because the kit zoom lens is a 28-70 f4.5 to 5.6,it covers the average use of a pearson, with the 1.5x in camera apsc-crop i can get a field of view of 105mm. To give you a perspective of what a ff/35mm focal lenght is in real life i'll send you a website

you can clearly see the depth of field of a subject by selectiing format, distances, height, aperture, lens focal length and everything,a picture can fool the viewer but not this website
these sliders are awesome
it's easy to navigate and it can give you a more realistic effect about how the things work with a lens, not the real representation but at least how far and how it would look

iyes,t all depends on the aperture, focal length and distance,if the sensor dimension is the same, obviously not counting rendering of the lens but that's what the equivalent result is

linux only lacks the manufacturers software,it's a shame they don't provide it but i think the time has come for opensource camera and cinema camera projects to unite and create something good for everyone and usable.
Manufacturer software for what purpose?
some functions, depending on the manifacturer, aren't available on camera: pixel shift/focus stacking/composites/paronarma/high resolution mode/aided editing and so on. I have an analogue XLR mic. But the interface is proprietary.
In theory I can replace the interface with a home-made one, but the interface I have is rather simple so I don't actually gain anything by open-sourcing it.
Webcam that I use, pretty much the same thing. Of course its firmware is proprietary, but it is so simple - as a device - that I gain nothing by open sourcing it. It shows itself as a standard webcam to my computer...
As for open-source camera (for photography) I could imagine a device that has no powerful processing CPU, but delivers RAW photos to your computer exclusively - so that you have to use Darktable to deliver them. This camera would not need any kind of software. But also this camera would not be cheaper than what you have now.
Sensor costs.
Lens cost.
Body adds up to the price a little bit.

I don't know how much proprietary cameras are limiting us in what we can do, but I understand we could get new features with an open source one
as every diy projects, you can make everyone build their own with a guide
I just am not sure if it's worth the price, because when I hold a Canon camera in my hand I can feel how much R&D was invested in the build quality. What about an open source hardware build? I am not saying that it will suck, but how much will it cost if it is produces in low quantities?
but there is another side of this coin that I, as a consumer, forget: my wife attended a photography class and she received a loaner camera while the class was ongoing. her teacher said that it doesn't matter what kind of camera you have, as long as you know how to use it.
then he proceeded to show a cardboard box inside he placed a film and punched a tiny hole in the box and created a photo with that.

TBH that's more of a you issue, that you're so keen on having same titlebars everywhere even if app is designed otherwise.
correct :)
no author will tell me that I cannot have KDE titlebars on his app
a camera is only an example of these projects, there are many ways to do the same thing. The project is open, you can provide your own shape to it but every little modification/personal redesign can be applied to your own based on other people work and viceversa.
Can you have them on the bottom?
you cannot separate titlebar and frame in kde. they go together
or I don't know how
Then there is something dev can tell you.
Then there is something devs can tell you.
either way - I am not against Adwaita design as long as every single app on my computer looks like that
Not gonna lie you had me in the first half.
is that good or bad?
I'm just teasing you a little.
seriously, I like the default look of modern Gnome. but I get mad when I have to exit its design guidelines and use something like Kdenlive because Gnome doesn't have a good video editor. and it's not about KDenlive. it's about that one app that doesn't fit that gets me mad
We have different opinions on this. I care about app window itself looking consistent, you care about titlebars of different apps looking consistent.
same goes for KDE, but that titlebar trick calms me down just enough
For me, apps can look different from each other all day long, I don't care as long as they a) don't look terrible b) they have consistent design. I hate Blender or Resolve with a white title bar infinitely more than Blender having a dark one while e.g. file manager having a light one.

I hated Discord having default title bar so much that I did the unthinkable and switched Discord to the light theme. Exactly because otherwise default light title bar conflicted with dark themed Discord so much I couldn't handle it. Admittedly this is also a me issue. 😉
I don't remember Blender all that much in detail. I used it a bit, but not enough
I am about to do the unthinkable
I will shut down my home server that has a couple hundred days of uptime
Here it is:
that looks a bit off, yes
Even better when maximized but I couldn't find such a screenshot in brief search.
on a tiling window manager it is not a issue since they dont exist except for some popup or window mode on i3 but on hyprland they dont exist at all
unless you have hyprbar
but they are server side so they look all identical
but they appear on niri for some reason for gtk app
and they are annoying
and they dont work obvisiouly on niri
but qt app do not show title bar on niri
gtk client side title bar are annoying
and are they called client side window decoaation by gnome ?
I guess in case of GTK apps those are not really titlebars but headerbars i.e. toolbars with window controls?
You can disable all the control buttons if you want to BTW, i.e. no close, minimize and maximize buttons.
maybe but on hyprland they do not show nore on i3
It's in dconf somewhere.
/org/gnome/desktop/wm/preferences/button-layout — there.
Just make it empty and there should be no window buttons anymore.
Yes i agree
Also Cosmic solves my frame nightmares in tiling and in floating mode

G’day sir
Today I learned that my cpu isn’t designed for 3200 mts with 4 ram sticks
I have had 4 ram sticks previously, at 3200, and it worked
Manufacturers always specify low-ish specs just in case. I don't think newer Ryzens spec'd 6000 RAM either despite it being the sweet spot.
“They” say that 3600 is the sweet spot for overclocking ddr4 ryzens

A general rule of thumb saya that 2L of water in a day should be “optimal” for an average grownup. However, I have a friend who drinks 8L per day so I suspect different body means different needs. I have been drinking less than 1L for many years and I have been trying to learn to drink more than 1L for the past few years. Regular sips help because I simply can’t swallow a lot at once.

I fixed one issue that annoyed me with ESO launcher. I may be playing it a bit in the following days. IT has been a while, and apparantly now all content is free
good,is the launcher messed up?
yeah, the game feels like 10 fps if you don't close the launcher after it launches the game
at least on nvidia linux
on radeon linux I think it wasn't bad at all if launcher remained in background
on steamdeck it has small performance issue like one big stutter every XY seconds (can't remember how much)
technically, launcher does not cause real in-game stutters. when I launch the game then FPS counter says 100 fps clean straight line. but visually it looks like 10 fps and even my entire KDE Plasma desktop feels like slideshow while this launcher is open, with nvidia gpu
so the solution is to close it as soon as the game starts
I have a "social media" type of question for GIT users here.
What if I make software that is useful to someone else (not just to myself) and MAYBE someone wishes to contribute changes. But I move my git repo somewhere where those people (who would maybe contribute) don't have an account.
I suspect this is one of the biggest motivator for people NOT to leave Github. FOMO.
Should have bought Radeon.
for gaming that's the best choice, yes.
I wonder if that's a KDE issue though.
I purchased this compromise card because you know why: video encoder
could be a mix of kde and wayland and ESO and nvidia
radeon is not immune to effects of this launcher. but it's not ugly as with nvidia, for whatever reason
this launcher is just CEF packages into some semi transparent edges bullshit
I remember EA launcher (which is made with UE itself) caused lots of FPS loss if not hidden.
maybe this launcher would work better without this transparent frame
Check nvop while only this launcher is open.
Check nvtop while only this launcher is open.
nothing.
Does that launcher change when game is launched? Like it starts playing some animation or smth?
no, but the entire desktop is unusable while launcher is open
it does animate a little bit. text changes every few seconds and that image on the right
I don't need a fix for this problem right now. I fixed it by auto closing it with a script. But it is interesting to learn what causes this horrible desktop performance

Honestly with today's prices I'd choose 9070 XT instead of 5070 Ti, the latter is priced ridiculously high.

However, if I were Darth, I'd not buy Steam Machine and invest into upgrading his rig instead.

I was once into this "waiting game" but once you start waiting you can wait forever because next year something better might come along
Is that guaranteed? I only saw rumors.
I told myself I don't upgrade until my CPU hits the limit
I'm more worried about PCIe3.
and I was unable to find proof that I need more than PCIe3
if I could somehow verify that PCIe3 is choking RTX 5070Ti then I would upgrade to PCIe4 for 100€
I guess if GPU is not at 100% all the time then it's bottlenecked, either by CPU or the interface.
i'm not playing the waiting game,it's just that the upgrade path is finished and the next gen cpus should have a good uplift, someone could get the previous gen cheaper and on the new motherboard, the sam e thing am4 did well.
that sounds logical, but it's not a guaranteed test
lots of times I am not bottlenecked with anything but my gpu is 60% because I set a fps cap
in this ESO game, my GPU is almost idling
swotor does it many times, gpu at 30%/40% on a 2011 game without fps cap and with a good cpu.
in this ESO game, my GPU is almost idling but everything works exceptionally well
I could unlock fps and let my game find a bottleneck somewhere .. but that's not a real bottleneck
new games are a different story and I am sure that in a couple of years I will see the limits of my cpu
~2030 year
even with x3ds some game does it,that's not a cpu bottlenck but the game itself
I have the first x3D
it was a phenomenal purchase
and I also have a 2018 chipset platform hehe
In reply to @darth:fosshq.org
new games are a different story and I am sure that in a couple of years I will see the limits of my cpu
very odd combo of components
consoles often settle with 30 fps.
I aim for clean 120 fps when possible, in some games 60 is perfectly okay.
i think the next gen will still be have 8 cores and without the x3d cache.
but my Steam Machine DIY has a "Console CPU"
i think the next gen consoles will still be have 8 cores and without the x3d cache.
consoles don't need cache because cache brings framerate and consoles don't aim for framerate
you will see what I mean when GTA 6 comes out and can only do 30 fps on PS5 Pro
games that sell the most copies are aiming for max graphical fidelity and FPS is irrelevant
console games that sell the most copies are aiming for max graphical fidelity and FPS is irrelevant
PC gamers are ... different
you're safe then, you need something that works with good gpus and with high enoigh framerate. Intel and amd should come next gen with different tiers of cpus with bigger cache, maybe games will start utilise it more.
perhaps I will wait for DDR6 CPU platform
it
i saw a rumored line up ad it talkes about the 2029/30 if the ram price comes down
it is coming in ~2028, maybe, and I didn't plan to upgrade my DDR4 for 3 more years, maybe

ok programing courses generated XD
iceblade92 remind me about this "LPIC = K&R C"
I will explain later
Yes — that's The C Programming Language, 2nd edition, by Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie (Prentice Hall, 1988), the canonical "K&R2." And it's firmly under copyright: Pearson (which absorbed Prentice Hall) holds the rights, Kernighan is still alive, Ritchie died in 2011, so it won't enter the public domain for a very long time.
The important correction first, because the framing matters: fair use is a US doctrine, and you're in Croatia. The EU — and Croatian law (Zakon o autorskom pravu i srodnim pravima) — has no flexible "is it transformative / how much did I use" test. It has a closed list of specific exceptions. The one that's relevant here is the quotation exception: you may quote a lawfully published work for purposes like criticism, review, or illustration, provided you credit the author/source and stay within what the purpose requires. So the question isn't "is this fair use," it's "does this fit the quotation exception" — and the answer depends entirely on how you do it.
Reading the book cover to cover, or systematically putting its pages on screen across 38–40 sessions, is not quotation — it's reproduction and communication of the whole work to the public. That's clear infringement, and a long, systematic series is harder to defend than a one-off, not easier.
But here's the part that frees you up: copyright protects expression, not ideas, facts, or methods. The C language, the concepts, the algorithms, the order a topic builds on the previous one — none of that is K&R's property. Their specific prose, exact wording, page layout, and literal code listings are. So you can teach everything K&R teaches, in the same progression, without touching their copyright — as long as the words on screen and out of your mouth are yours, and the code you type is yours. Concretely:
Separately from the law, there's platform enforcement, which usually bites first. Under Article 17 of the EU's 2019 DSM Directive (which Croatia has transposed), YouTube and Twitch are more liable for infringing uploads and filter more aggressively. Pearson actively issues takedowns. A copyright strike needs only a claim, not a court — and strikes can take a channel down while you're still arguing the merits. So even a defensible use can cost you something.
One option that fits how you work: if part of the appeal is having a text to anchor the series, Modern C by Jens Gustedt is released under a Creative Commons license, is freely and legally distributable, and is more current than K&R (C11/C17 vs C89). You could put that one on screen all you like. K&R is the canonical, historically important text — Ritchie literally co-wrote it — so I get wanting it specifically, but if the real goal is teaching modern C with shareable materials, Modern C removes the legal problem entirely.
Usual caveat: I'm not a lawyer, and this isn't legal advice. For a 38–40-week commercial series, a short consult with a Croatian IP lawyer — or even an email to Pearson's permissions department asking specifically about educational streaming — would be cheap insurance. I'm happy to draft that email if you want it.

in other words youtubes coppywrite bots will strike you down becuse its already in americas coppywrite system witch youtube follows harshly
doesn't work that way
also I can tell youtube to strike down brodie robertson channel and claim he did a copyright infringement on my work and youtube will remove his video immediately
then brodie needs to call youtube support and go through a very complex procedure to prove his innocence. if he succeeds then youtube will punish me severely for false copyright claims
but youtube does not remove copyrighted content on their own. always someone needs to trigger it manually. a 3rd party.

It's also easy to confuse with multiplication.
And teachers using second style are cursed. This style gives a false impression that e.g.
int* var1, var2;
— will declare 2 variables as pointers to int.
It also falls apart the moment you need to define a more complex type.

int* a, b;
int *a, *b;
Seems easy enough?
No, only a complex one, lol.
int (*arr)[10];
void (*func)(void);
arr is a pointer to an array of 10 ints.
func is a pointer to a function with no parameters and returning void.
And if you have a pointer to an array of 5 functions accepting pointer to int and returning pointer to function accepting pointer to char const and returning size_t…
int* var style basically goes against how variable types are determined by C compiler.

His handle on You Tube is ‘Just a Guy’ and he appears often on The Linux Cast on YT. His name is Drew. He recently brought out his own version of Debian, based on SID, I think, called ‘Butterbian.’ I tried it but, for some reason, couldn’t get wget to work with my ISP, so I couldn’t download the .iso.
I changed SSD in my 450 days uptime server and installed proxmox for a change
very lovely interface. don't think I got anything by installing it, compared to naked debian, but I wanted to check it out. it's extremely easy to use
What hardware you use for your server Darth
this. and NVMe is currently 512GB.
Cool cool, I've been trying to get one up and running from some spare parts I had around and had the dilemma of doing a server install of Debian and then doing the stuff I'd need or proxmox which is basically Debian as well as far as I understand
It’s debian with vm gui
That’s the server
Sounds simpler
Oh mine looks much more janky
The one on the right is storage only
14 years old 8-core xeon
Not bad for light stuff. Probably not good for nextcloud as it needs single core performance
Plenty of ram for shitload of vms
I guess for storage I'd doesn't get much full on time
Water cooler server?
Water is my enemy hehe
It's what I had laying around
Keeps it under 45 at full load lol
That’s the best, then
Maybe it would be a good storage server if the case has enough drive bays
Well case has 0 for now as I have it on my open bench setup but the plan is to put it in a nice box and forget about it should be replacing a lot of things tho storage being one of them down the line
Dunno how feasible is putting all of what I have in mind into one box but the horsepower is there
@iceblade92 posted in 105.2 Let's Learn Linux: Customize or write simple scripts — Lesson 2
dont know XD i gues array = ($1, $2, $3, etc) becuse your missing the () to make it an arithmetic comparison but why is it true not sure. IFS=‘\n’ i think so it would seperate only on newline and sens you want it temporary just type IFS=‘.’ to revert it
ZFS can make use of those cores and ram
@Rootlexx posted in 105.2 Let's Learn Linux: Customize or write simple scripts — Lesson 2
Well, that will work but what if you have more arguments? There’s a way to specify them all at once. That will make . a separator which is not what you want. How can we restore the previous value of IFS?
Interesting didn't think of that guess it's time to find some spinny drives as well
I don't need much space anyway 1tb would be more than enough
Depends on how important your data is
At least do a mirror with 2x 1TB spinny
However, 128GB ram is overkill for 1TB storage.
Yeah ofc that's what I was thinking of
1TB drives I asume you will find used? In that case maybe a three-way mirror is even better.
If your data is important you need safety while you are replacing a failed drive. Backup is a good idea
Well I know but I guess my thinking is, is it too complicated to have one machine let's say running proxmox handle this, then spinning up VMs then maybe jellyfin and other things, I think I wanted to ask does adding stuff it handles complicate handling them in any meaningful way
It's my first project doing anything network related as well haha so I think I just have a lot of ideas before I started doing anything basically, I'll probably streamline it down the road but for now it's fine
You can put proxmox on it, yes, then services as vm’s or LXC containers
Nothing complicates by adding more vm’s. Just spread resources
But where will your storage be, then?
I mean my storage is extra machine. I was thinking about getting another proxmox compute node and giving them both truenas vm storage
How do you mean, like physically?
I guess that answers my question I was thinking I could only do like one use case
@darth:fosshq.org: do you have any need for containers or only vms?,if that's the case,do you use docker or podman?
My forum is docker in a VM
My nextcloud is docker in a VM
Spam bot in this channel is docker
Spam bot in this channel is docker in a VM where deb Synapse is installed
It all depends on what the creator of the service software supports the most — that’s the method I use
I don’t use Podman. No particular reason. I cannot find fault in Docker to want to replace it
LXC containers are very cool — that’s the next thing I will try. They are better than Docker/Podman because they have their own networking stack. They are comparable to FreeBSD Jails.
What's the difference between e.g. Docker networking modes?
What's the difference vs e.g. Docker networking modes?
They're all using the same underlying tools (namespaces) after all.
Can Docker have directly attached dedicated NIC like a VM?
As i understand it — it can’t
LXC can do own nic, own routing table, own firewall rules, own dhcp client, … it’s a VM but but without VM overhead (from the networking perspective)
You can put docker container inside LXC container hehehe
It has macvlan.
No body
I just realized lxc is older than docker

think we can do array = ( $@) so it will use all arguments even if we dont designate the amount of arguments unset IFS then bash will start spliting as default
Yeah, I saw your channel on the banner. Did you request to be added there, or how does it work? I asked the support in email earlier, but they didn't answer my question

Yep, just a tiny little improvement: use quotes around $@ so that arguments with spaces work as expected. But the answer is correct. True. You could also save previous IFS value to a variable ans restore it afterwards.
I did request it, yes. I think I sent them email more than a month ago and they did not respond at all.
And after I forgot that I sent them email, they suddenly replied and said they will put me into “next rotation”.

Hey, I don’t really like to make a presentation of myself so I"ll try to do it in 3 sentences: I love freedom I don’t like to not be alone in any places I’m trying to use Slackware15 btw. Thanks for the forum. 🙂
@stayvvierd12 posted in Should the Linux community be pushing the EU to promote Linux and FOSS?
I definitely believe in 1984 since I read it some kind of 10 years ago. I also believe the movie Idiocracy. I don’t think EU promoting Linux (but here we should say GNU/Linux I think) to public is a good stuff. I don’t trust in governments as I don’t trust anybody. Government promoting Linux , or even FOSS, is a bad thing I think as people will not read the code and just follow what the governmen...

Welcome Slackware user! I hope the forum serves you well in the future.
I am considering making a forum poll where people can say what their primary distro is. So we can have an insight into forum population diversity.
Putting 100 distros in a poll seems a bad idea. But I cannot alter poll options after creating it because adding a distro resets poll results
Should I compress options to ~20 distros or scrap this poll idea?
Ideally would be that options can be added but poll technology doesn’t allow it

I was looking for this kind of forum for a long time so I’m sure it wille suit me. 🙂
Is it going to be live for a certain amount of time, or will you keep it forever?
I would prefer forever, but there is another problem. If any mod “ends” the poll, it cannot be un-ended
Maybe a poll is not a perfect way to get what i want: stats which distros are primary to users of the forum
Does Discourse support reactions? Discord servers often run polls via reactions despite Discord having poll support. Then users can leave their distro reaction, change it at any time, and it will remain forever.
Admittedly it's a hack, but it kinda works.
I think it’s doable, but if there is a better way I will want to know about it

I’m a bit late and I just register but I’m happy to see somebody that distrohopped on Arch. x) I did then same, but it was a long time ago. when you printed manuals. Gosh I’m that old? Welcome!!!

That’s the problem: there are over 100 choices to forget about
I found a way
it's a bit unprofessional, but I didn't program it myself. I used a built in custom field tool.
the problem I see is that when you pick from the drop down menu - the database remembers the string you picked. not an id of the string. so I am not allowed to alter the name of any distro.
however, I can add more distros in the future so at least that's a plus.
also I need to query results every now and then, but that is fine by me.

in your forum profile you will see a linux distro to pick. let me know if I have forgotten something or I wrote the name wrong. I cannot alter names after people start clicking on these options.
